The Balkan Sports Arena
Podgorica, Montenegro
The Balkan Sports Arena is envisioned as a civic-scale sports complex that acts as both a high-performance facility and a social catalyst for the city. Our intent was to create an environment that meets global infrastructure standards while inspiring young talent from diverse backgrounds to engage with sport as a pathway for growth.
Inclusiveness is central to our approach. The planning is structured to be open and accessible, welcoming users across socio-economic groups, while still organizing spaces to respond to different needs. This allows multiple user groups to coexist comfortably without reinforcing social barriers.
The project is anchored by a strong public realm, where landscape and open spaces extend beyond the built form to encourage everyday use. These areas foster interaction, recreation, and a sense of community ownership.
Sustainability is embedded into the design through water-sensitive planning and integrated green systems. The landscape is designed to manage runoff through capture and percolation, while façade-integrated photo-bioreactors help reduce the building’s carbon footprint.
The result is a cohesive, future-ready sports complex that supports performance, encourages community engagement, and contributes to the city’s evolving urban fabric.
