The Crown Jewel of Detroit
Detroit, Michigan
The Crown Jewel is envisioned as a landmark waterfront development that contributes a bold, contemporary identity to Detroit’s evolving skyline. Positioned along a key urban void overlooking the river, the project responds to its context by creating a strong visual and cultural anchor for the city.
Our concept draws from the layered history of Detroit, referencing the French settlers and the native tribes—Chippewa (Ojibwe), Potawatomi, and Ottawa—who shaped its origins. The three towers are conceived as architectural expressions of these communities, each reflecting distinct characteristics through program and form. The business tower, inspired by the Chippewa, integrates green terraces that reference trade and water-based practices. The residential tower reflects the grounded yet progressive nature of the Potawatomi, while the hotel tower draws from the transient, mobile lifestyle of the Ottawa.
At the core of the development, a central pyramidal winter garden acts as a unifying element. This glazed volume becomes both a climatic buffer and a civic interior, symbolically representing the French influence in the city’s founding.
Together, the towers rise as a cohesive composition—an abstracted “crown” on Detroit’s skyline—marking a new chapter for the waterfront while remaining rooted in the city’s cultural lineage.
